Texans Postgame Quotes (Week 14)

Head Coach DeMeco Ryans

On if C.J. Stroud is in concussion protocol…

Yes, C.J. will be in concussion protocol, we’ll see how he progresses throughout the week.

On what happened to WR Nico Collins and how that affected them moving forward…

Unfortunately, Nico had a lower leg injury with the calf, and we lost him for the game. Of course, it hurts when one of your best playmakers is not there, right, it hurts us but this game it strictly came down to, credit to the Jets. Their players, they made plays. They made plays and we didn’t. You go out and you play that way, you don’t make plays, you don’t deserve to win the football game. So, we didn’t show up and make enough plays to win and when you play like that, that’s what will happen.

On why they didn’t commit to the run game earlier…

We tried to run the ball. We had some ops there, still mixed it up. The weather wasn’t bad enough where you couldn’t throw the football. It wasn’t that bad of a rain, we had some ops there, we just didn’t make the plays.

On the second half adjustments they saw from the Jets…

Not many adjustments for us. When they came out in the second half to get momentum, we didn’t make plays on defense, we didn’t execute right. When you don’t execute, you let a team get going there, they gained momentum, ended up scoring a touchdown there on that first drive out, but it’s strictly because of things we had miscues on defensively that we have to play better.

On if they see a pattern from losses against teams with a similar record…

To me, it never matters about record. We never go in a game saying this record, by this team or that. The record really doesn’t matter. We know when we line up, no matter who you play in this League, you have to bring your best every single weekend. We knew this is a good football team based on the tape. We don’t go off the record, we watch the tape you know this is a good team. Defensively, really good team and offense they moved the ball. They’ve made plays throughout the year. So, it never has to do with the record, it’s all about how you show up on Sunday.

On why Jets QB Zach Wilson was able to have more success in the second half…

Yeah, we didn’t make plays. We were in a position to make plays on the football. When we’ve won games, we’ve made plays on the ball, and we didn’t make plays on the ball today at coverage where it should be. Scrambling around, we didn’t execute up front and we allowed Zach to get out of the pocket too many times. He scrambled, made a few plays. We knew that’s his style of play as a quarterback right, so we don’t execute upfront, we allow him to extend plays, therefore we give up big plays there especially on third down where we should be off the field.

On discrepancies between how they’ve played against Pro Bowl QBs vs younger/rookie QBs…

For me, it doesn’t matter who you line up against. They’re all NFL players. Everybody who is out on that field is capable of making plays. That’s why they’re in the League, that’s why they have the positions that they have, so Pro Bowl, no Pro Bowl, it really doesn’t matter. You have to go out and play your best every week and we didn’t play our best today.

On if today was frustrating…

It’s very frustrating when you don’t show up like we should have showed up there in the second half.

On losing LB Blake Cashman…

It’s tough, we lost a lot of guys today. It’s tough losing Blake, Blake has been a guy we can count on on defense and he’s stepped in, he’s earned the right to play more snaps for us and with him going out, that definitely hurts us on defense.

On MetLife Stadium turf…

Yeah, I don’t know. Every field, guys get injured on across the League. It’s just the nature of what we do. Injuries happen, I can’t blame it on a field, or what it may be. If I could figure out injuries, they’d probably pay me a lot of money, but I don’t know why they happen.

On how to make things easier for the offense given the injuries…

For me how do we make things easier, I think it all starts with just executing what we’re supposed to do to give ourselves a chance. I think you have to start right there, you have to be able to execute the game plan and do what we have to do, no matter who’s in there.

On his opinion of Jets DL Quinnen Williams’ hit on Stroud…

The hit with C.J., we have to block it better. We can’t allow them to get back to our quarterback, we have to block it better up front.

On what positives he can take from the game…

Not many positives for me to take away from this game. We got to play better.

On with the rain, will he watch the tape or flush it as a wash…

We’ll still go back and watch it intently. Right, it’s tell the truth Monday. We get in the room, we tell the truth. You know, what happened? We’ll analyze the film as we do every Monday to make sure that this same thing doesn’t happen again.

QB Davis Mills

On the game…

Obviously, a lot of credit to that defense. They did a really good job applying pressure and locking down and covering behind it. Credit to those guys. We continued to strain throughout the game and just couldn’t really get anything going, so it was a tough day.

On QB C.J. Stroud’s injury…

I mean, super tough. I love that man. He’s been battling week-in, week-out for this team. Obviously, it’s tough seeing him go down. I know the team felt that. The team wants to go out there and play for him. I’ve just got to step in and make sure there’s no drop off when I come in and play, like I tried to do at the end of this game. It’s just a tough day.

On whether he’s prepared to start next week if needed…

Of course. Nothing changes in my terms of preparation. Going into the offense, even as the number two this year, I’ve been preparing every week like I’m going into the game to start. So, I don’t think there should be any change in preparation.

On whether there were difficulties playing without WR Tank Dell and WR Nico Collins…

Obviously, Tank and Nico are great players and it hurts us not having them out there playing with us, but we have a lot of guys in that room who have done great things and continue to do great things, who we have a lot of confidence in going out and making plays. So I don’t think it should be too much of an issue not having those guys.

On the message from head coach DeMeco Ryans…

The big message is, we have to go out there and play our brand of football. It felt like there wasn’t much energy on our sideline this game and we’ve got to go out there and strive, strain to go out there and be relentless, and play our best brand of football.

TE Brevin Jordan

On why the team came out flat today…

Yeah man, it’s football, it’s really just football. It’s tough man, it’s tough, honestly it’s tough. That’s really my answer.

On how much the weather played a role…

Yeah man, it was tough. It was raining, but it shouldn’t be a factor. We practice all the time, every day, timing, steps with the quarterbacks.  So, I mean it shouldn’t be a factor, but today I felt like we just really beat ourselves, really the main thing.

On losing C.J. Stroud due to injury…

I was just telling somebody, he’s really like the light of our team. He’s a guy that’s came in here, brought a lot of moxy, a lot of swag, and to see him go down it’s tough. But it’s football, get ready to get back to it, next man got to be up, got to be ready to go.

RB Devin Singletary

On what QB C.J. Stroud means to the team…

Man, a lot. That’s our guy. That’s our leader. We’re all rallying behind him. Now, we’ve just got to be there for him. Like I said, hopefully it’s nothing too serious and we get him back soon.

On preparing for next week’s game…

Yeah, we’ve got to first go in and like I said, continue to see what we did wrong, look at ourselves in the mirror, man up and get back to it, get back to playing Texas football.

S Jimmie Ward

On how the team will step up next week…

It’s the NFL, man.  Any given Sunday, no matter the team, everybody’s smart, everybody’s good players and everybody has a great team. We’ve just got to watch film, correct the correctible, and come back out next week and be better than what we (were).

On what aspects of their game needs correction…

Just to end up running some beaters to our defense and they ended up making more plays than we did, so I can’t really tell you what adjustments. I know they got the ball to the playmakers, 17 (WR Garrett Wilson) and 20 (RB Breece Hall), and I feel like we could have done a better job stopping those two guys.

On MetLife Stadium’s turf…

I know a lot of guys are not too big on turf. I’ve been fortunate enough to not have any serious injuries, but I’m a team player. So, if the majority of the guys don’t like it, then I don’t like it either. I just want to stay injury free and I hope the guys that are down on my team and their team today, I hope it’s not that serious and they’re going to come back soon.

WR Robert Woods

On how the team will respond to this loss…

I think everybody in this building is going to step up starting tomorrow. Everybody is focused on this team’s success. We’ve got a great group of guys to be able to flip this thing around and get to work and get back on track next week. We’ve got Tennessee, playing pretty well. Just got to go out there and get a win.

On how frustrating this loss was knowing what was on the line…

Every game is importance, especially at this point. But it is a tough one to lose on the road, one that we were expected to win coming into this, with how we prepared. So, every loss is tough, but this one is a tough one on the road. We have guys to rebound and get this thing back on track. We’ve been here before. We know how to flip this thing around, and like I said, we have the right guys in the building to do so.

On the injury to QB C.J. Stroud…

I didn’t see the hit, just saw him on the ground. First things first, it’s always prayers up that it’s nothing serious, but it’s always tough when you have a player go down, especially a quarterback, a leader of this offense, but we’ll see what it is. But full confidence in Davis, if needed.
