On replacing Zach Wilson with Chris Streveler…

We were just trying to get the run game going. Strev (Chris Streveler) had a couple of explosive plays and one thing led to another. He gave us a spark and we just wanted to keep is going. Initially, it was meant to be a change-up.

On if the move was based on Wilson’s performance…

No. We were trying to change it up to get the run game going. I know Zach was struggling. Streveler came in and ran a couple of plays and sparked the offense. He got the explosive play and it just snowballed in a good way for Strev (Streveler). We wanted to give him an opportunity to try to finish that drive. By the time we got it back again, same thing, we’re already here, let’s keep going with Strev (Streveler).

On where he thinks the root of Wilson’s struggles came from tonight…

There are a lot of things. One, we couldn’t get the run game going again. The protection wasn’t as good as we wanted it to be. There were a couple of missed throws. It was collective, coaching, all the way down.

On if he has seen a different quarterback since Wilson’s return…

I feel like he has gotten better, but we have to go show it on the football field. Again, it’s a collective thing. It starts with coaching. Either way, it wasn’t close to good enough today.

On if he considered pulling Wilson at halftime…

No. I wasn’t considering pulling him at halftime. Again, the intent was to just kind of spark the run game. It was still a two-score game. Spark the run game, get that thing going. We came into the game – especially with the weather forecast, and it ended up being a great day – with a package of plays for Strev (Streveler) to utilize the run game in the event that the weather got out of hand. With that package, we moved right down the field and had them on their heels. Obviously, we didn’t finish the drive, but he sparked the offense. We wanted to keep it going.

On sticking with Streveler on obvious passing drives later in the game…

Same thing. Strev (Streveler) runs around and he makes plays. The protection wasn’t great for him, either. He was just able to slide and get out of the pocket and create some stuff off-schedule and move the chains. By the time he got into those two-minutes situations, I think there was three minutes left.

On how debilitating the Jaguars 96-yard touchdown drive was…

That whole first half, we couldn’t get into a rhythm in all three phases. That 17-play, 96-yard drive, whatever it was is unlike us. It took up a whole lot of time, had the offense sitting on the bench. We couldn’t get first downs. We couldn’t get off the field. I thought the defense responded in the second half. Again, gave up one touchdown on the day, but it wasn’t nearly good enough as a whole for what we feel like is our standard.

On what he said to Wilson after he was replaced…

“Keep your head up.” He’s got to keep working. We haven’t seen the last of him, but right now, we just have to focus on finding ways to get better. We have to find ways to help him. We have to find ways to protect better. We have to find ways to run better. We have to find ways to call the game better. We have to do a lot. It’s not just him – it’s a collective whole. We all have to find ways to get better.

On if he is worried about what this might do for Wilson’s confidence…

Confidence is a big thing. As a man, you’re going to have adversity. As a human, you’re going to have adversity. In your life, you’re going to have the ups and downs. Obviously, he’s in it right now. Zach is the type of kid that is going to work his tail off. He is going to keep his head down. He’s going to find ways to continue to improve. You’d be remiss if you didn’t try to acknowledge the fact that there is a confidence thing there because when people are confident, they can conquer the world. It’s just something that we have to help him with, too. It starts with coaching from all of us.

On what he will do if Mike White is healthy next week…

I’m not prepared for any of that. There’s a lot of medical stuff that we have to get figured out. Let this weekend go and we will see it all on Monday.

On why the team seems to play with more energy with quarterbacks other than Wilson…

I don’t know if it’s the same energy. I don’t have an answer to that one.

On his feelings about the big picture with this team and postseason chances…

It’s not about playoffs right now. It’s not. We’ve played four consecutive teams that are in the hunt for the playoffs. We battled three of them and are really disappointed about this showing today. Right now, it’s not about playoffs. It’s about getting off this mat and finding a way to put together a football game.

On why the Jets offense seems to function better with other quarterbacks as opposed to Wilson…

Those are things we have to look at. To stand up here and give you that answer, I don’t have that answer. There’s a lot of stuff that we have to talk about. I don’t have that answer right now.

On the return of Quinnen Williams and his performance on the first series of the night…

For sure, generated three points off it. Got the takeaway, which we haven’t been able to get for a while. I thought we were about open the floodgates and get a lot of them, but Quinnen is one of the top five players in all of football on defense. Whenever you have a chance to get a guy like that back, he’s going to affect the game.

On what he saw from his offensive line…

It’s not good enough right now. At all.

On what gave him trouble tonight…

I don’t know. I just felt like I didn’t have any rhythm out there. Just trying to find some confidence out there on the field and just find something to get us going, a little spark, and I couldn’t get anything there and I had opportunities and I’ve got to be able to connect on those. We’re going to go back and watch it and I’m sure the coaches will detail it up for us, but right now the feeling is I’ve just got to put my head down and just try to get better for these guys. That was kind of my message to them out there is, ‘I’m trying to give them everything I’ve got, I’m trying to lay it out there for you guys and it’s not good enough and I’ve got to put them in a better position.’

On his emotions in the third quarter when Chris Streveler went in…

Yeah, you have to look at it from a team perspective, right? We’re not doing anything offensively and I’m trying to figure it out, I’m trying to help get the guys going, I’m trying to get myself into a little bit of a rhythm and we had nothing there and so you can’t blame them in that situation. You put Chris out there and he’s obviously great with his legs and his arm and he was able to give us a little bit of a spark there, we were able to move the ball a little bit and he obviously is one of those guys who is going to lay it all out there for the guys. I’m always happy for him, he’s one of my good buddies, and so I’m happy for him to go out there, but you could see that was the most we moved the ball all day, so you can’t blame them there.

On if he expected to go back in after Streveler came in…

I was always staying ready. I wasn’t sure what the plan was. It was kind of a last-second package that we put in depending on not knowing what the weather was going to be and everything, and so when he hops in there, I’m just trying to stay ready on the sideline. You never know, but really not up to me.

On if it’s hard to watch another quarterback spark the offense…

Yeah, it is. And that’s when I’ve got to look myself in the mirror. I’ve got to go back and I’ve got to go back and watch this tape. You’ve got to be hard. You’ve got to be hard on yourself. You just say, ‘Why are we not moving the ball?’ And that starts with me. What am I doing that I have to help this team to be in a better position to move the ball? Whatever it is, I’ve got to figure it out.

On if he’s thinking too much on the field…

Yeah, I don’t know if it’s thinking, I think you’re just trying to find some confidence on the field. I’m just trying to feel rhythm and flow and confidence and just the ability to just feel like things are there. I haven’t been able to find that for myself and that’s the goal, that’s the search, is how can I approach this film with just that learning mindset, try and just get better from it. But I didn’t put my team in the best position out there and we weren’t able to do anything on offense.

On if it’s tough to hear boos…

Yeah, it is, but you don’t blame them. We have a very passionate fanbase and they’re here to watch us score touchdowns and we’re not scoring touchdowns, we’re not getting first downs, we’re not moving the ball, we obviously can’t throw the ball. So, of course they’re going to be frustrated.

On the challenge to stay positive…

Yeah, it’s tough and I’m working my way through it, but I’ve got to be optimistic here. I believe in myself regardless of whether everybody else does and I’m just going to go to work and show these guys how much I care about them on this team and this season’s not over for us and I’m going to just do everything I can and control what I can.

On if he had ever been taken out of a game before other than for an injury…

A couple of weeks ago was the first time.

On when he realized he was going to get a chance to play this week…

You know, short week, so kind of found out today. We were kind of putting a package in.

On if he expected to play as much as he did in the end…

Whenever you’re dressed you got to expect to play. You never know what can happen in this game, so just got to be ready at all times and prepare like you’re going to play.

On his mindset and his performance…

My mindset is always just, try to move the ball, score points, one play at a time and obviously we didn’t do that, we didn’t score points. We moved the ball a little bit, but you got to finish, and three points isn’t going to win games. We all got to be better. I’m going to look in the mirror, we’re all going to come in tomorrow, watch the film and see what we can get corrected and get better from this.

On what Coach said to him before going in…

They said, “You’re going in, let’s try to get something going, take it one play at a time,” That’s what I tried to do.

On when he realized he wasn’t coming out for the rest of the game…

Well, once you go in, no one told me I was coming out. So, when you’re in there, you’re just trying to take it one play at a time, like I said, and just try to make positive yards and get the ball moving. No one ever took me out, so I just stayed in and kept trying to get positive plays.

On when they started calling plays that weren’t in the package

It was kind of after that first drive, we kind of went into a little more up-tempo mode and just try to get things going, down two scores, got to get down the field quick. A lot of that stuff was, like Coach said, run game stuff, so to move the ball quick we got to do some different stuff.

On what it felt like to get his first NFL regular season experience…

I’m just not thinking about that right now. It’s just disappointing to lose, and it’s a team game. It’s not about any of that, it’s about putting points on the board and winning football games, and we didn’t do that today.

On if he said anything to Zach Wilson on the sideline…

I mean I always tell Zach, we have a great relationship, and our quarterback room is very tight-knit, and I just always told him, “I got your back, bro.” We all have each other’s back in that room and we all support each other no matter what the situation is. We’re always going to support each other, we’re always going to have each other’s back, regardless of what’s going on outside of that room.

On if he had a message in the huddle late in the game…

Same thing I’ve been saying, it’s just take it one play at a time. Let’s just keep fighting, one play at a time, and even when you’re down a couple of scores late there, we still got to go out there and fight and put points on the board, move the ball and keep fighting. That was pretty much my message, and we tried to do that, but we just didn’t put points on the board.

On what Jacksonville did to stop the run…

I mean they just played hard. It’s more about us, we just didn’t execute well tonight. We got to execute better, and we’re going to watch the film and see what we can get corrected moving forward into these last two weeks. We’ll be in tomorrow and do that.

On the disappointment of not performing with playoff implications…

It’s always disappointing when you don’t execute, regardless of any of that other stuff. It’s one game at a time, and it’s always disappointing when you don’t execute and do what you set out to do. So, regardless of all that stuff, it’s always disappointing.

On how he is feeling physically…

Yeah I’m fine, I’m fine. Mostly just feeling the disappointment of not winning a football game.

CB Sauce Gardner

On what happened during the Jaguars 96-yard touchdown drive…

I don’t even remember what happened. I can’t even remember, we shouldn’t have let them march up the field like that. I don’t know what happened though.

On the disappointment of coming up short in a key matchup…

It was extremely disappointing. We couldn’t execute, we couldn’t play complementary football today. You know the way the fans see it, they see it just the quarterback situation, the offense, but we as a defense, we take pride in everything. Even though 19 points is not too much, we need to get takeaways and score at this point. Our special teams didn’t have their greatest night today, but we know we got a lot of dogs on special teams, so got to play complementary football.

On how debilitating the losing streak has been…

I don’t even know what to say. I was extremely confident, I’m still confident in this team, but I was extremely confident and I don’t even know what happened. It’s like our fourth straight loss, and a couple of them we shot ourselves in the foot at the end of the game, like can’t do that stuff. I take pride in what I do individually because I feel like it starts with me, I gave up like 20 yards today, 20 yards that I gave up that led to a first down, so I got to be on my side, it starts with me because I’m the one on the field, and we got to execute.

C Connor McGovern

On what happened with the o-line…

I’m not sure. I need to go look at the film and really take look at what it was and what we need to keep doing to get better. That’s the only one thing we can do.

On what they thought about Chris Streveler coming in…

Yeah we were just, every play, it didn’t matter who was back there, we were doing our best. I think the o-line as a whole doesn’t feel great. Everybody isn’t happy with the outcome of that game. We all know that it’s on us to perform better and it’s on us to protect whoever’s back there.

On the offense not being able to score points…

Not sure at this point. I got to go back and watch the film and we need to take a deep look at ourselves and come back and fix it.

CB D.J. Reed

Did you like the tone was set for the night after Quinnen Williams’ sack..

Most definitely, like that’s our standard of football. He got the ball, I think he had a pass breakup too, he just creates a lot of havoc and just wrecks a lot of games. so yeah, Quinnen’s a phenomenal football player.

On the mindset being just to win the game now…

Yeah, let’s just win the game. We’ve been talking about playoffs this whole December. Let’s just win a game, that’s my focus. Getting ready for Seattle, let’s focus on winning and whatever happens, happens, but let’s just focus on winning the game.

On what clicked in the second half…

I would say usually at halftime we got about our corrections. We see what the offense did to be successful in the plays and pretty much say, stop them from doing that and make them do something else. Trevor Lawrence, they were moving the ball a lot so it was getting him on the outside, running the ball and buying him time to throw the ball. So, that was one thing that we emphasized and saving some runs. They were doing a lot of runs on the outside. It was about me setting the edge, I could have done better with that and just him running bubbles and running stuff on the outside of the perimeter. Just got to watch the film.
