Jets Postgame Quotes (Week Fourteen)

Head Coach Robert Saleh

Opening statement…

Quinnen (Williams) is dealing with a calf, we’ll reevaluate him tomorrow. (Brandin) Echols has got a quad, he suffered that on that punt; we’ll see tomorrow. CD is in the concussion protocol, that’s Corey Davis. Marcell (Harris), he’s dealing with an ankle. We’ll see, again, tomorrow. And then just now, just for a postgame evaluation, Mike White, we’re going to send him to the hospital just to make sure he’s good. It’s more precaution than anything.

On if White has a rib injury…

Yeah, it’s the rib injury.

On the decision to put White back in the game…

He was brought in to get evaluated, x-rays, all that stuff, everything checked out good, he felt good, and wanted to come back in.

On White being taken to the hospital…

I think it’s strictly precautionary – just to be safe.

On what was wrong with the pass protection…

You’ve got to give them credit, they’ve got a really good defensive line over there. No excuse. We’ve got to protect better. But they’re pretty darn good.

On if White will start next week if healthy…

Yeah, for sure.

On what White endured today…

I thought he showed resolve, toughness, everything that we’ve been seeing. He’s a good player.

On how devastating the two fumbles were…

The big one, the fumble right there in the fourth quarter, I thought the defense did a really nice job in both situations in minimizing the damage, but two turnovers are always…when you lose the turnover battle, you’re not giving yourself a chance to win a football game.

On C.J. Mosley’s encroachment on fourth down…

If you remember, that’s kind of the en vogue thing right now where the quarterback looks like he doesn’t know what’s going on and then they snap the ball with somebody going in motion. Miami got us on one, if you guys remember that back in Week (Five) or whatever week that was. Good pre-snap play design. They probably weren’t even going to snap it, but it was a good pre-snap play design.

On if Williams’ injury is an Achilles…

No, it’s a calf. We’re not worried about (that).

On if Williams’ injury is long-term…

What I’ve got right now is day-to-day from the trainers. They feel like he’s got a chance to make it this week.

On punting on fourth-and-one down 11 points…

We needed a possession. You could go either way. It was a discussion between all of us and I just wanted to cut the possession. I felt that we’d get the ball back. They did us a favor and threw the ball on first down so we had a timeout and 50 seconds to go the length of the field. I could probably replay that in my mind and go for it, but at the end of the day we had the ball with a chance to at least tie. I can probably go back and forth on that.

On White’s performance…

He’s tough. I mean, shoot, he plays the game really well, he plays very fast, he processes very well, gets—for the most part—gets rid of the ball pretty good. I think it showed everybody else, more than what we already knew, in regard to how tough he is.

On if White will be on the team flight…

Yeah, he should make it back for the flight. He won’t be available, obviously (to the media).

On Bam Knight…

He’s a good back. He’s explosive, runs hard. If he sees a crease, he can hit it. He gets vertical pretty quick. As violently as he runs, he’s—knock on wood, I don’t want to jinx him—but he’s been good with ball protection and security. So, he’s a good one.

On what he feels like after the game…

Obviously, I love our guys, that they fight their tails off, but I think I speak for everyone in that we missed an opp (opportunity). We’re going to see these guys again.

On what makes him say they’ll see the Bills again…

I just think we are.

On if he thinks they’ll make the playoffs…

I think our team is good enough. We’ve got, obviously it’s week-to-week, but we’ve got a good football team.

On how critical the long completion to Stefon Diggs was…

It was big. Anytime you give up an explosive (play) in a drive…it kind of clouds what I thought was a really, really good day for the defense. They stood up in sudden-change opportunities, held them to field goals when we turned the ball over. Fifteen percent, two-of-something, on third down. I thought they did a really good job against a really explosive offense and just couldn’t get the momentum.

On when he felt the team would make the playoffs…

Nothing’s guaranteed, obviously, I’ve just got so much faith in that locker room, so much faith in the coaching staff, so much faith in everybody that’s involved day-to-day, and I know we’ve got four big-time opponents coming up and we’ve got to focus on Detroit, they’re playing damn good football, but I don’t know, I’ve just got faith in our group.

On if he shared that faith with the team after the game…

I don’t know. I may have…I think they feel the same way I do. I don’t think there’s a guy in that locker room that feels that we’re not capable of so much more. Obviously, Buffalo, I’m going to give them credit—they’re a damn good football team and a Super Bowl contender and all that stuff—but we’re a young team and we’re an exciting team and I think there’s a lot of confidence in that locker room.

On if Buffalo’s five- and six-man rushes surprised them…

No, they’ve done that for one reason or another and it’s something that eventually we’ll have to figure out why they just choose to blitz us so much. But obviously, it works some for them. I do think we missed a lot of opportunities to take advantage of it, but it’s something that they’ve done against us.

On Michael Carter’s two penalties…

The one in the corner I was on the other side of the field. Probably tugged him a little bit, for sure. Still thought he played a really good game. I’m not sure what the second one was…Again, penalties will happen. We play an aggressive style of coverage and sometimes they get called and sometimes they don’t. Our aggressiveness is why we’re pretty good, too.

On White’s precautionary tests…

No, I understand. I’m not a doctor. I’m guessing any time you’re dealing with something with the ribs and all that stuff you just use precaution to make sure. But that’s probably more for doctors. I have no idea. I’m just told its precaution.
