Eagles Postgame Quotes (Week Six)
Head Coach Nick Sirianni
On what his message to the team was in the locker room…
Yeah, I didn’t have to say much. In fact, I didn’t say anything, our guys as soon as we got in there, they talked. A lot of different guys said different things, that’s what you want out of your team. That part was a big positive because they’re holding each other accountable, they’re holding themselves accountable. I’m holding myself accountable, and so, I didn’t have to really say anything. The leaders on the football team did and we’ll keep what they said tight in there.
On what he saw on the interception by QB Jalen Hurts in the fourth quarter…
I’m going to have to see that play again and see if there was something that flushed him out of the pocket. He had to hold it for a tick longer, I’m going to have to see what happened there. It looked like they played some sort of cover four on that. We had a completion on that play earlier in the drive and then I’ll have to look at the tape exactly. I know Jalen’s going to want that play back, obviously. I thought that was pretty much the only turnover that was on him though. We need that back in that critical time, he’s going to want that back. We want that back. If the play doesn’t work, we’re going to look at ourselves as coaches first and say, ‘Was that the right play?’ That’s part about being accountable and I know Jalen’s looking at himself in the mirror as well.
On how difficult it is to win the game when you have four turnovers…
Four times, minus four, you all can look at the stats on that but I don’t know if you win many games when you’re minus four.
On if there were any thoughts to run the ball when it was third and 9…
We thought that if we got the first down there, in that particular case, the game was over. You know, the worst thing that could happen, happened. Sure, every time you’re going to think about it. I don’t think in that particular case we thought running it was the right thing. Then we got a third down, earlier in that drive that we converted on in similar circumstances. We’re going to trust our guys to make plays. I think (WR) A.J. (Brown) had a pretty good game and we’re going to trust our guys to make plays in that particular case. You know, looking at it, again, we’ll have to put them in better spots to succeed and then we have to execute.
On T Lane Johnson’s status…
I don’t know yet. We’re going to have to – I haven’t even met with the doctors yet, so we’ll see. I just don’t have any information.
On how things shifted when Lane Johnson went down…
We got a lot of faith in (T) Jack (Driscoll) and the things that he can do. We’ve won a lot of games here with Jack in the lineup. And so, he came in, I’m going to have to look at the tape to see how he played. We did a couple more things where we were protecting the edge, which helps you get one less guy out in those cases. I wouldn’t say we did it an abnormal amount of times, but we did sometimes, but that’s what you do. You have to adjust your game plan based off what’s going on in the game. Again, I’ll look at the tape, see how I felt like Jack played, but I know we’ve won a lot of games here with him. Obviously, any time you lose a player like Lane, Lane’s one of the best players in the NFL, you’re going to obviously miss that. But I’ll see what I think with the tape.
On how he stresses ball security every week and then having four turnovers…
Yeah, different, I think the first interception was a little bit – the ball bounces in weird ways, right. And (DT Quinnen) Williams was in the right place at the right time to get the turnover. I think one was a quarterback hit that they had. I’ll have to look at (RB) DeAndre’s (Swift) again, if he didn’t get quick to the catch-tuck right away. And then like I said, we walked about the last one. Anytime you’re minus four, I don’t know if anyone looked at that but you’re not going to win many games there if you’re minus four. In fact, you’re not even going to really be close so, I thought it was good by the defense (they) did a nice job keeping that game close when we had the lead all the way until the end. Even under the circumstances, they held them to field goals and shoot, yeah. You get upset about it, we’re going to be upset about it because we do talk about it a lot and we talked about it a lot last year as well and I think we had a four-turnover game that kind of ended a winning streak we were on last year as well. Like anything, we’re going to go back and we’re going to look at why the turnovers happened and do our best to eliminate them. And we have to do a good job as coaches, making sure we’re putting them in situations where these turnovers aren’t happening as far as how we drill it and different things like that. We put a lot of time and effort into that and we’re going to have to look at how we can fix it on our end fundamentally to help the guys.
On if it’s tough knowing the defense played so well and couldn’t bail them out…
It’s tough any time we lose, regardless of the circumstances. Again, we’ll have to go back and look at everything and fix everything. Sometimes after bad losses there’s great times for growth and so that’s what our mission will be to grow from this, grow from the mistakes that we made. I think the most obvious one is the ball as we’ve talked about. Yeah, we’ll have to grow from this.
On when they became aware that Jets CB Sauce Gardner was going to be out…
I think it was, when did it come out? Yesterday? Yeah, plan stayed pretty similar to what we were doing. Obviously, when they’re out a player you change a little things here and there, that we obviously did.
On if Gardner being out affected the game plan…
Yeah, a little bit. A little bit.
On being pass-heavy despite leading the whole game…
I mean the lead, we were playing ball. I don’t think it had ever gotten to a point where it was ‘hey, bleed the clock.’ We were up, I think 14-3, but there was a lot of time left in the game there. You don’t take the air out of it there. I think in the four-minute drive we were up, 14-12, knowing that a field goal could beat us, so we had to continue that drive and try to convert on that third down. So, that’s just what we thought was the best available for us at that particular time. I didn’t feel like we were in a four-minute mode quite to say. I know the clock said four minutes left in lower, but still when you’re up two, you’re playing that pretty aggressive right there.
On what the conversation was with Hurts right before the two-minute warning…
Just about what play to call, what we thought would be the right play in that particular case. Listen to what he thought, discussing what we thought, discussing what the coverage might be. We do a lot of studying of what critical third downs are and critical fourth downs. You go in with a thought, you try to discuss that thought and you just try to come up with the best play you possibly can. It was just communicating, communicating there, that’s basically it.
On the three-and-out during the final offensive series and what went wrong…
I can’t remember the exact first play. Yeah, I’m blanking on that first play. We got the third down, we were short on the third down, I thought that was the best to convert on fourth down. We wanted to at least be able to talk about it and not have to be on the ball on fourth down so I used one of our timeouts. Obviously, you want to be in the drive as you use one of the timeouts. But, when we were short on third down and the clock was running, I thought, I just didn’t want to put us in a stressful spot there. You know, came out and then we just, the last play, again, we have to do a better job of putting the guys in positions to succeed and then we have to execute. It all starts with us as coaches and again, each one of us having accountability for what went wrong today.
QB Jalen Hurts
On Tony Adams interception…
I had an opportunity and I didn’t do my job on the play. I don’t think I made the correct read on it, but it happens. It’s an opportunity for us to learn from it and grow.
On Lane Johnson’s injury and how it affected him…
For us, we pride ourselves on everybody being ready to step up when an opportunity’s called and you look at the guys that come in and have an opportunity to play. Everybody has to be ready, one. Everybody’s prepared to play and everybody has to answer that phone when the phone rings, but you know you look at this game and you have so many missed opportunities and really so many mistakes as if you’re kind of giving it away, you know. Look at the last loss I’ve had in the regular season against Washington last year and look at the turnovers. You turn the ball over four times you shouldn’t expect to win. So, give a credit to them, how hard they played. And the tenacity and the resilience they played with. The Jets team played with great resilience, but I think we gave them too many opportunities. They did a great job of attacking the ball and then turning the ball over but those are things we can control. So, give a ton of credit to them.
On how he will get over the loss and the interception…
We’ve been here before. It’s all about how you respond to it. I’ve got a feeling how we’ll come in and come in with some great intensity. Some of these things build character. I say that all the time, it truly builds character. So, this team just has to respond the right way.
On the post-game locker room…
It’s just a matter of how we respond. That is the number one focus point. It takes preparation, intensity, mental focus.
On accountability…
The standard is the standard. It only rises. Today we didn’t play to our standard. We didn’t play to our standard today. You turn the ball over as much as we did. Very unfortunate on two of them, I feel, but you just have to control the things that you can and the objective is to play to our standard at all times and demand excellence of ourselves. And we were not today.
On whether there was discussion to run the ball prior to the interception during the two-minute warning…
I can’t recall.
On what kept them from getting momentum on the final drive…
Lack of execution. Lack of execution, using my word for that.
On where he thinks the team is and what is important for moving forward…
It’s about how you respond. How we respond and what our mentality is moving forward. These things happen. This is the NFL. That’s a great team we played. A damn great defense we played. You turn the ball over four times you should’ve expect to win, so it’s an opportunity for us to look ourselves in the mirror and respond. I have confidence that this team will do so.
On what he remembers taking away from their last regular season loss…
I can’t tell you that at the moment, off the top of my head, but it’s about how we respond. There are a lot of guys that are hungry, eager to fix the mistakes that we made today. Everybody will partially hold themselves accountable, as they should. That’s top down. And we continue to move forward.
On why he’s confident the team will respond well…
It’s just the mentality. I’m not going to sit here and say we’ve been here before or anything like that, but we have, but I think it’s just a matter of how we respond and that starts with me and how I lead the charge. We’re just going to take it day by day yet again. These things definitely happen. It’s a tough one, for sure, but it’s an opportunity for us to grow. And these things and these moments build a ton of character. So, if you go into it and handle it the right way, you can turn this negative situation into a positive, and that’s what we plan to do. That takes a ton of hard work, it takes a ton of discipline and diligence and focus. Understand Rome wasn’t build overnight. It’s a process and we’re going to trust in that process for us as a team.
On whether he thinks a fire needs to be lit underneath this team and whether this will be a big test to see how the team responds…
Not a test. It’s just about how we control the things that we can. So, we go out there and control the things that we can, play with great focus and fundamentals, good things will happen. I don’t think we played with good fundamentals today. We’ve just got to go out there and learn from it, got to look ourselves in the mirror, top down, and push forward. This is an opportunity to make myself clear, this is an opportunity for us to grow. You look at the situation and you say, yeah of course it’s frustrating being on this tip of it, but the great ones turn negative situations into positive situations. And the great teams do that, as well. So, this is an opportunity for us to do that.
On the adversity he’s been through and managing the ups and downs of the season…
I just go out there and be myself. It’s gotten us this far, so it’ll take us further. So, I have a ton of trust in my teammates and I know they have a ton of trust in myself. We’re going to go on this journey and ride this wave together, and that’s what it’s all about, because it’s the ultimate team game. You win some and you lose some, but you live to fight another day. We’re very fortunate to have another opportunity next week to go out there and play our brand of football and play to our standard, so that’s the goal.
C Jason Kelce
On the number of turnovers tonight…
Yeah, obviously turnovers hurt. We made a lot of mistakes against a good team, a good defense like that, and you can’t do that. Frustrating day. Offensively, it felt like we moved the ball well at times. The passing game link was there a lot of the game, but I think obviously turnovers hurt. If you’re off there’s penalties or whatever it was, it kind of felt like we always kind of had it. Something happened that kind of stalled drives, but we’ve got to, just everybody look in the mirror and try to get better for next week. This is a good team and kudos to the (New York) Jets for playing a really good game, and the defense especially.
On Philadelphia Eagles T Lane Johnson injury…
One of the best tackles in the league. It’s difficult whenever you’re losing a player of that caliber, but I think there’s more than just that and we’ve got to play better.
On rallying younger players despite teammate injuries…
A lot of these guys have played a lot of football for us. (Philadelphia Eagles T/G) Jack (Driscoll) has played a lot, so we’re very comfortable with him. We’ve just got to communicate and make sure everybody’s on the same page. That’s the biggest thing, especially on the road. You can get a lot of times and trying to make sure everybody’s on the same page is a big part of getting new guys in, and having new guys play positions that they’re trying to get ready for.
WR A.J. Brown
On how they adjusted in the secondary…
We didn’t really have too much time to think about it. Guys just had to step up and just go out there and be ready to play. I always said to the guys that the young guys are always communicating once you get there. Even if you say something wrong, you got to just communicate in a lot of ways to put you in the right spot. Communication is key and those guys have a job coming in there, too.
On the challenges faced today…
I think we were challenged a little bit, but our coaches do a good job preparing our guys throughout the week, guys preparing themselves. They know we have a rotation going on, so they did a good job preparing themselves. I go out there and I was just trying to communicate.
On how they flip the page after a loss…
I come in Mondays and I get to work. I have a routine, Monday, Tuesday, whether it’s an off day or not. I have a routine to try to prepare my body, recover the bod, get me a little work out in. Just grind, that’s how I kind of flip the page.
